October 2009 Martin Luther, the great and well-known leader of the Reformation, struggled with the issue of his own importance. It seems hard to imagine when you take a look at his tremendous impact on the Christian Church. But there was a time when Luther could see himself only as someone who was under the wrath of God. No matter what he did or how hard he tried, he could not escape the conviction that he was a sinner. He was the least, the worst, and completely UNIMPORTANT! And worse, he could do nothing to change that. That, however, is when God's Word revealed to Luther that he was IMPORTANT. He was so important that God sent Jesus Christ to die for his sin and be raised again for his justification. He was so important, in fact, that God counted Jesus' righteousness and perfection as Luther's purely as a gift. Luther came to realize that he was important in Christ Jesus. You, too, are that important. During the month in which we celebrate the Reformation we are reminded to be uplifted by what God has done for us in Jesus. In Him God counts us as perfect, righteous, and holy - IMPORTANT! We are important to God. And we are important to one another as a member of our Son Life family. Have you ever considered your importance to your congregation? The same God who has made us so important in Christ has called you to be an important member of our church. Each and every member is a gift of God. Each has some gift to share. Each is IMPORTANT to the ministry our Lord has called us to carry out collectively. You are important! Since God has "re-formed" you to be a "new creation in Christ," let us never entertain thoughts that somehow we are not important, nor that we have nothing to contribute. God's gift to you in Christ is your importance in His eyes. You, then, have become an important gift to God's people known as Son Life Lutheran Church. You are needed. Pray how the Lord can use you as together we continue to grow and mature as a congregation. Pastor John
